This year’s most nominated artists at the ongoing MTV Video Music Awards in New York are Justin Bieber and Megan Thee Stallion.
Justin Bieber did win the award for artist of the year and opened the show with an explosive performance that had him rappelling from the Barclays Center’s roof and performing Stay with Kid LAROI and his track Ghost. Bieber, who was the most nominated person going into the night, also won the award for best pop song with Giveon for Peaches.
It was Bieber’s first VMAs appearance in six years, and he’s also up for other top awards such as Popstar Video of the Year. Bieber, dressed in pants and a hoodie, expressed his support for the awards being held in person and praised his wife, Hailey, for her support.
“As we all know, there’s a lot going on in the world,” Bieber remarked after accepting the award for artist of the year. “With COVID, we are living in unprecedented times. Music is a fantastic way to bring people together. We’re all here at the same time.”
At the MTV Video Music Awards, Lil Nas X won video of the year. While winning the night’s last prize for the video for his song, Montero, Lil Nas X declared, “I don’t take anything for granted” (Call Me By Your Name).
BTS was named Group of the Year, Olivia Rodrigo was named The best New Artist and Song of the Year, Billie Eilish was awarded Video of the Year for her ballad Your Power, and Travis Scott was named Best Hip-Hop for Franchise.
In her acceptance speech, Eilish, who won the fan-voted video for good for her song Your Power, stated Alicia Keys kissed her on the cheek before she spoke about the delight of writing the song and the importance of women’s empowerment.
The Foo Fighters gave a performance before accepting the Global Icon Award, which was given out for the first time at the VMAs. The award honours an artist or band “who has maintained a unique level of global success in music via an exceptional career and continued impact and influence.”
