John Legend Reveals He And Chrissy Teigen Use Couples’ Therapy

John Legend opened up about him and wife Chrissy Teigen using couples therapy to strengthen their seven-year-long marriage.

In an interview with the Cosmopolitan UK, the singer has revealed secrets about how his relationship with Chrissy has lasted this long. He also feels grateful for the coronavirus lockdown which enabled him to spend time with his kids, Luna and Miles.

The musician opened up about the surprise of finding out that Chrissy is expecting their third child. He said he was surprised to know that they naturally conceived their third baby while having to go through IVF treatments for their older children.

John and Chrissy tied the know back in September 2013 after meeting on the sets of the singer’s music video, Stereo. The musician has revealed a few secrets of managing their lasting relationship. He said, “‘It sounds obvious, but being with someone you really care about, respect and enjoy being around. I think that’s the crucial foundation.”

The All of Me singer added that communicating, being considerate, listening to your partner; he said making sure your partner’s needs are met, are also important factors. John also said receiving advice from outside also helps and revealed that they go to therapy sometimes.

The singer believes that every couple who has been together for a long time could use the time to talk with a third party; to help with whatever concerns they have. Talking about the extra time received because of the pandemic, John describes it as “heaven”.

“We Thought It Couldn’t Happen This Way”

John said, “We’re spending a lot of time with each other and that means our kids are in heaven.” He further explains that the ideal situation for the kids is to hang out with their parents all day. However, he also says there is a downside for him, that is, having to cancel his tour. The singer had to postpone his Bigger Love Tour to next year.

He said, “I’ve released a new album and want to be out there performing the songs to people.” John and Chrissy surprised their fans last month when they announced their third pregnancy. The couple announced it through John’s new music video, Wild.

Talking about the surprise announcement, he said it was a surprise for him as well. He confessed, “We had struggled to conceive naturally all this time and figured it would never happen. I guess all of the time spent at home together was enough to conquer any fertility challenges we had.”

John admitted to feeling worried with Chrissy as they thought it could not happen this way and that something was wrong. However, he assures that all tests have come back great and they feel very good.

The musician also revealed how he has still not had the conversation of the Black Lives Matter Movement with his kids. He explained it is because of their age and it is difficult. John said, “It’s difficult because at some point you have to have conversations with the kids about what it means to be who they are, to have brown skin and to come from the ancestry they do.”

The Love For Kids Is A Different Kind Of Love

He adds it is a little early for them to know the details of the grave situation of police brutality. The singer said, “At this point, we only talk about their race and try to make them believe they’re valuable and worthy, and that their skin and hair is beautiful the way it is.”

John also acknowledges how being a father has given him a sense of purpose which is greater than himself. He said we can influence the next generation and make the world a better place. The singer said being a father also makes you think about your work priorities.

He explained when Luna was born he felt the need to be home and thought about his work schedule. The Conversations In The Dark singer says it is a different kind of love. He explained, “You feel love for them because they’re yours, but you feel this responsibility for them as well.”
