Jared Leto recently talked about how he prepared for his role in House of Gucci in an unusual way. The film, which was only released in theatres earlier this month, stars Leto as the late Paolo Gucci.
He served as Vice President and Managing Director of the well-known luxury brand Gucci for a year before being fired and going on to create his own business. The House of Gucci, directed by Ridley Scott; is based on the true storey of the Gucci family and is based on the book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder; Madness, Glamour, and Greed, published by Sara Gay Forden in 2001.
The film depicts Patrizia Reggiani’s relationship with the Gucci family and business in the late 1970s. In addition to Leto, the film also features Lady Gaga as Reggiani and Adam Driver as Maurizio Gucci (her husband).
Leto utilised colourful analogies to explain his preparation approach during an interview with The Playlist for House of Gucci. In order to communicate his commitment to the character, he makes extravagant analogies between himself and conventional Italian food; even joking that he snorted “lines of arrabbiata sauce”. He believes that by going through this bizarre experience, he was able to truly express Paolo Gucci’s soul in his performance. Take a look at what Leto had to say:
“I enjoyed and embraced that and lived in that space as much as I could..”
“I did it all. (And)I was snorting lines of arrabbiata sauce by the middle of this movie, I had olive oil for blood. This was a deep dive I did. If you took a biopsy of my skin, it would come back as parmesan cheese! This is my love letter to Italy. There was a lot of work and preparation, and yes, I had an Italian accent, and I enjoyed and embraced that and lived in that space as much as I could, and for as long as I possibly could. I climbed into that creative cave and came out through the bowels and intestines into the esophagus of the one and only Paolo Gucci.”
Leto is no stranger to method acting. After his award-winning performance in Dallas Buyers Club (2013); in which he starved himself to drop weight and make himself look ill; he became well-known for the practice. Leto, on the other hand, has been doing this for a long time and has a history of severe weight loss and growth for his characters.
He is known for taking his roles extremely seriously, most notably as the Joker in Suicide Squad (2016). Used condoms and sex toys, as well as dead animals, were rumoured to be given out as gifts; but Leto has subsequently rejected some of these claims; however, he did give out other in-character gifts to his co-stars during filming.
Lady Gaga also claimed to have collected notes from a domestic cat, a fox, and a panther in order to prepare for her role. Jared Leto endured over three hours of make-up to change into the character of Paolo Gucci; rendering him practically unrecognisable and demonstrating his commitment to the part.
While Leto looked to be joking in the above comment, he was ready to put himself through this ordeal for House of Gucci; and evidence from other projects suggests that snorting lines of arrabbiata sauce isn’t out of the question for this determined actor.
