James Charles had recently taken to Twitter like many other celebrities to express what he thinks about the execution of Brandon Bernard. Brandon was sentenced to death in 2000 for his involvement in the murders of Todd and Stacie Bagley.
The beauty blogger wrote how his heart hurts as he added how disappointing it is but it is not surprising. He wrote, “Disappointed but not surprised by the SCOTUS petition rejection as well. We need a government that listens to our voices. This f–king sucks.”
Charli D’Amelio also took to her social media handle as she expressed her disappointment as well. She wrote that she was not on her phone all day and she checked Twitter to find out what happened with Brandon. The TikTok influencer expressed how “incredibly disgusted” it is to see him be put to death.
She wrote, “after not being on my phone all day I checked Twitter to see what is going on with Brandon Bernard and I’m incredibly disgusted to see him be put to death… he does not deserve this and it breaks my heart that our outdated legal system is taking the life of an undeserving man.”
However, one user criticized James and Charli for the way they addressed the issue. The Twitter user wrote, “Isn’t kinda weird how the first sentence is ‘After not being on my phone the whole day’ like your a TikTok star. It’s weird how @jamescharles @iamlorengray @dixiedamelio weren’t in their phones today? Brandon has been trending all over the internet. It’s just f–king weird.”
“It’s impossible to speak about something going on if you don’t KNOW about something going on”
James responded to the critic as he said it is not weird that he and Charli were not on their phones that day. The YouTuber explained that he, Charli, and other influencers had been making content for their social media accounts all day. He explained that he did not hear about Brandon until tonight when he checked Twitter during a few minute break.
The beauty blogger shared that he posted right away after reading about Brandon’s situation. He further explained how it is impossible to speak on something that is going on if he does not know about what is going on. The YouTuber wrote, “It’s impossible to speak about something going on if you don’t KNOW about something going on, & it’s also never wise to speak about a situation, especially to a large platform, before fully understanding it as well.”
James also recalled his past experiences when he publicly expressed his social and political issues. He shared how one can’t win and ignore something when people are upset. The beauty blogger added that even if one speaks about something, people will still be upset.
“Instead of focusing anger towards influencers, we should be directing our anger to our country’s f–ked up legal system that unjustly took the life of Brandon Bernard today,” he continued. “Justice will one day be served and it’s important that we use our voices and platforms to hopefully make a change for the better.”
James also gave a piece of his mind to people who think James’s online presence should require a deeper understanding of what’s going on in the world. He said how it is not practical and shared how there are some days he is on his phone for a moment when he wakes up till he goes to bed.
“Just spoke to Brandon for what will likely be the last time”- Kim
The beauty blogger explained how there are also days when he barely picks it up because he is busy doing other things. He said, “No one, not even influencers, can be aware of every single thing happening 24/7.”
Kim Kardashian West also played a part in bringing Brandon’s case to the limelight as she tweeted in the hours until his death. She shared, “Just spoke to Brandon for what will likely be the last time. Hardest call I’ve ever had. Brandon, selfless as always, was focused on his family and making sure they are ok. He told me not to cry because our fight isn’t over.”
The reality star shared that he told her he is claustrophobic and they offered him a shot of sedative to calm him down before they put him in the chair. She shared he did not want to panic and “literally lost it”. The Skims creator shared that she had to mute her phone so he would not hear her cry.
Kim further shared how they did not say goodbye because they wanted to be hopeful that they would talk again. She shared that they kept the phone as they said, “talk to you soon”.
Brandon was put to death by lethal injection on Thursday evening after the Supreme Court denied a final request to delay the execution. An accomplice, Christopher Vialva, was executed this September, while three other co-defendants received lesser sentences.
