Jake Paul has more or less ‘confirmed’ his MMA debut after disclosing what weight class he’ll fight in, as well as hinting that a fight with UFC superstar Conor McGregor may be on the way.
Jake Paul was ecstatic after having a fantastic year in 2021. He not only defeated Ben Askren and Tyron Woodley in their first fights, but he also defeated the latter in a rematch, making his professional boxing record 5 – 0. There has been much speculation as to who he will face next. He’s been connected to matches with the likes of Mike Tyson, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, and even UFC great Jorge Masvidal.
Paul hinted it was happening less than a day after UFC president Dana White downplayed his feud with Paul and said “never say never” about his octagon appearance. He also speculated that it might be Conor McGregor. “When I make my MMA debut, I could cut 20 pounds and do it at welterweight,” he stated, bringing him down to 170 pounds.
“That’s what all UFC fighters do, and many have destroyed their bodies and minds doing it”. He eventually opted against it since he wanted to put his health first. Instead, he has come up with a new idea. “I’m going do it at middleweight,” which is quite a bit higher at 185. “Health first.”
Paul also mentioned that it would put him nearly at the same weight as Conor McGregor, who is at 190 pounds. While this doesn’t make a fight with McGregor any more likely than it was before, it does confirm Paul’s interest in facing the UFC superstar.
Paul stated in December 2020 that he is “dedicating his life” to defeating McGregor. At the time, he also issued a $50 million battle challenge but received no response.
However, in April 2021, he acknowledged that fight talks were starting, and in November 2021, he reiterated that it may happen within the following 24 months. We’ll have to wait and see whether it becomes a reality.
