HYBE Chairman Calls BLACKPINK The Standard For K-Pop Girl Groups

HYBE Chairman Bang Si-hyeok has hailed BLACKPINK as the “standard” for K-Pop girl groups. Every company that debuts a girl group wants it to be the next BLACKPINK, but no company has been able to match their global success.

Speaking at the Kwanhun Forum held at the Press Center in Seoul on the morning of March 15th, Bang Si-hyeok said that BLACKPINK is considered the “super IP” for girl groups, and that their success has been a catalyst for energizing the overall K-Pop business, including fashion, consumer goods, and education.

BLACKPINK, which made its debut in 2016, is often referred to as the “biggest girl group in the world.” They are the most successful Korean girl group internationally and have set numerous records in the music industry. They are the highest-charting female Korean act on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 13 with “Ice Cream” in 2020. Their second studio album, “Born Pink,” released in 2022, became the best-selling album of all time by a female act in South Korea and the first to sell over two million copies.

Blackpink was the first girl group to top the Billboard Artist 100 and the first Korean girl group to enter and top the Billboard Emerging Artists chart. They have also received certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for their single “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” in 2018. Their collaboration with Dua Lipa on “Kiss and Make Up” in 2018 was the first by a Korean group to receive certification from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) and a platinum certification from the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).

BLACKPINK’s success has not only been limited to the music industry but has also extended to other areas. They have collaborated with global brands such as Samsung, Adidas, CELINE, Chanel, Pepsi, Oreo, YSL, Dior, and have become fashion icons in their own right.

Bang Si-hyeok’s comments reflect the significant impact BLACKPINK has had on the K-Pop industry and beyond. Their success has not only raised the bar for other K-Pop girl groups but has also helped to boost the overall K-Pop business. With their continued success and global influence, it is no surprise that they are considered the “super IP” for girl groups.

BLACKPINK’s success emerges from their talent and hard work, and they have set a new standard for K-Pop girl groups. As Bang Si-hyeok stated, they are a super IP that has helped to energize the K-Pop business and extend its influence beyond the music industry. It will be interesting to see what new records and achievements BLACKPINK will set in the future.
