The play is yet to be titled but it is set during a pivotal moment in Westeros history, The Great Tourney at Harrenhal. This quest had taken place 16 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The official description of the play reads that the play will take audiences deeper behind the scenes of a landmark event for the first time.

This event, according to the description was hidden in mystery. “The seeds of war are often planted in times of peace” -Martin

For fans who do not know anything about the Great Tourney, here’s a gist. The Great Tourney was held over 10 days and it was considered the biggest competition event in Westeros. It included tournaments of jousting, archery, and much more.

The characters that will be roped in have not yet been confirmed. But according to George’s published books, the event saw a young Ned Stark, his sister Lyanna, teenager Jamie Lannister, the powerful Lord Robert Baratheon; Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, Prince Oberyn Martell, and noble knight Ser Barristan Selmy.

Other characters who will likely be part of the play will be Cersei Lannister, Littlefinger, Varys, Tywin Lannister, Tyrion Lannister. Meanwhile, our favorite characters from the original series who lasted till the end like Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, and Arya Stark were not even born. At the end of the event, Prince Rhaegar declared his love for Robert Baratheon’s betrothed, Lyanna Stark. This led to Robert’s rebellion and the empire of Targaryens being overthrown.

“The seeds of war are often planted in times of peace,” Martin said in a statement. “Few in Westeros knew the carnage to come when highborn and smallfolk alike gathered at Harrenhal to watch the finest knights of the realm compete in a great tourney, during the Year of the False Spring. It is a tourney oft referred during HBO’s Game of Thrones, and in my novels, A Song of Ice & Fire … and now, at last, we can tell the whole story… on the stage.”

This news comes after George R. R. Martin’s new five-year-overall deal with HBO. The move is to create content for the network. HBO has already started one of Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon. It is set to premiere in 2022 and there are also five other projects that are in different stages of development for HBO and HBO Max.
