Disney Remains Committed To Theatrical Release For ‘Black Widow’

Marvel’s highly anticipated female superhero movie, Black Widow is still expected to be premiered on the big screen. Bob Chapek, Disney’s CEO, revealed that they are still intending for it to be a theatrical release.

He shared that they are going to be watching very carefully to see whether that strategy needs to be revisited. The movie is set to release on the big screens by May 7. Bob also shared that the factors the company will be monitoring includes how many theaters remain closed in the U.S.

It will also depend upon the audience’s demand for the theatrical experience as the coronavirus pandemic continues. Disney is also considered as an ally of the theatrical experience and have been reluctant to break the traditional window.

However, Marvel has other properties which was also tied to Black Widow. The venture has been patiently sitting on the shelf since May 2020. Disney is also experimenting with releasing films on Disney+. Although this will only be under Premier Access tier which will be for an additional $29.99.

Projects like Mulan and the upcoming venture, Raya and the Last Dragon will debut under the Premier Access tier on March 6 day-and-date with a theatrical release. Although the movie Soul was premiered on Disney+ with no additional cost and helped lure strong subscription numbers.

Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow as the sole hero was first pushed to hit the big screen back in November 6, 2020. Other movies under Marvel include, Shang Chi, and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals and Spider-Man 3.

Shang-Chi Had Halted Production

Meanwhile, Disney+ is currently busy with Marvel’s Wandavision. Marvel’s  Hawkeye, Loki and Falcon and the Winter Soldier are all set to release this year as well. The new venture of Ms. Marvel is also expected to have her show debut this year.

Marvel Studios had decided on suspending the shooting of their upcoming movie ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’. The filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton decided to self-isolate himself under the recommendation of a Doctor.

Although this is a precautionary measure, Cretton does not display the symptoms of the coronavirus. However, He is waiting for his test results.

Marvel understanding the gravity of the situation issued a statement to its crew stating ” As many of you know, Destin, our director, has a newborn baby. He wanted to exercise additional caution given the current environment and decided to get tested for Covid-19 today. He is currently self-isolating under the recommendation of his doctor.

While he waits for the results of the test, we are suspending 1st unit production in an abundance of caution until he gets the results this coming week. The second unit and off production will continue as normal. We will reach out to everyone by Tuesday for the latest update. This is an unprecedented time. We appreciate everyone’s understanding as we work through this.

Besides, The Shang Chi team is in Australia since early February. Australia has more than 156 confirmed cases of Virus with Three people confirmed deaths.
