The finale of Spider-Man: No Way Home alternate cut sets up Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s return to the MCU.
Ever since the movie’s theatrical premiere in December 2021, fans have not stopped talking about it, and No Way Home’s latest digital release has added fuel to the fire. For the Sony/Marvel crossover, both Garfield and Maguire came back for their roles as Spider-Man. They joined forces with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker as they traversed the horrors of the universe.
The trio restored a slew of villains to their own realities. While the trio eventually split ways, there is a potential that they will re-assemble in the future. There were speculations that Marvel and Sony were trying to bring back Maguire and Garfield way before the third MCU Spider-Man titles were announced.
However, even after the repeated denials from people actually working on the project, the fact that the MCU began the process of constructing its universe convinced many fans that the accusations were solid. But when Spider-Man: No Way Home was released in theatres, it was established that Sam Raimi and Marc Webb’s respective spider-men were definitely a part of the historic movie.
Even after various leaks and persistent speculations, witnessing Holland, Maguire, and Garfield together on screen had a bigger effect. Among all the moving parts in No Way Home, director Jon Watts made the most of what appeared to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring all the three Spider-Man together.
But a deleted scene from the threequel, suggests that Maguire and Garfield may return to the MCU in the future. The trio bids their final goodbyes in the scene, and Holland jokes, “I’ll see you later.” “You know where to find us,” Garfield responds.
There may be a flaw in Doctor Strange’s spell that may reverse the entire scenario.
This basically indicates that Holland can contact Garfield and Maguire at any moment, keeping the door open for a reunion at some point.
It will not, however, be easy. As fans are aware, Spider-Man: No Way Home concluded with Holland’s Peter making the ultimate sacrifice. As the multiverse was on the verge of collapsing, he offered Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) permission to conduct a spell that would effectively rob him of his identity.
No one recognizes him as Peter Parker at this point, separating the character from the people he cares about the most. The mechanics of the encantation remain unknown, but it’s likely that Maguire and Garfield, who have now returned to their timelines, don’t recall Holland or their time together. However, if the script for Spider-Man: No Way Home is any indicator, there may be a flaw in Doctor Strange’s spell that may reverse the entire scenario.
Thus for Maguire and Garfield, now that their presence in the MCU multiverse has been established, Marvel Studios and Sony may opt to bring them back for future storylines, especially given the popularity of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Fans have been screaming for Andrew Garfield’s long-awaited The Amazing Spider-Man 3, and Maguire’s return to Sam Raimi’s universe as a much older, seasoned Spider-Man also lends itself to plenty of fresh storyline chances. For the time being, fans will have to wait and see if the fabled Spider-Men ever reconnect within the multiverse.
