David Schwimmer Finally Settles Ross and Rachel’s ‘We Were on a Break’ Debate
David Schwimmer finally settles the ‘We were on a break’ debate between Ross and Rachel.
In an interview on The Tonight Show, David set the record straight after all these years about Friends. The debate had started back in the day in season three of Friends. David’s character Ross got together with another woman after an argument with his girlfriend, Rachel. Jennifer Aniston’s character, Rachel accused Ross of cheating. However, Ross said they had broken up when he hooked up with someone else.
The couple has time and again argued about it in the sitcom throughout various seasons. Ross used to say all the time that ‘We were on a break’.

David said people are passionately divided on this subject, in his interview with Jimmy Fallon. Although this time he took a stand as well. He said it’s not even a question and that they were on a break.
Friends started in 1994 and made ten seasons before ending in 2004. David has revealed that he initially decided to pass on the role. Well, we cannot imagine anyone else playing Ross, and fortunately for everybody, he did not pass it on. David explained why he was planning to pass it on because of his miserable experience as a series regular. After his horrible experience before Friends, he actually vowed to never do another sitcom.
The Emmy-nominated actor said he had moved back to Chicago and he was doing theatre with his company. He recalled when his agent got a call about Friends he immediately said no.
Jim Burrows Convinced David to Play Ross
However, Jim Burrows came to the rescue. He was directing the pilot episode of Friends. Burrows said that creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman had written the character Ross with his voice in mind. That is when David knew he could not say no to it.

David further explained when he came to know they had him in mind while writing the character, he felt like it was the biggest compliment. And we all know that he went on to do it.
The actor further talked about the HBO Max reunion of Friends and gave us a little tease. He said it is unscripted and that it is a really funny interview. It also has some surprise bits according to David.
Schwimmer can be seen in another series the first time after Friends. He is playing Jerry Bernstein on Intelligence. It can be found on Peacock.
