Dallas Mavericks Have No Answer For The Phoenix Suns Trailing 2-3 In The Series

The round 2 of the playoffs is getting more intense with the matchups going towards Game 5. The Phoenix Suns welcomed the Dallas Mavericks to their territory following a loss in Dallas. The Mavericks are riding on high horses now that they have gained the momentum in the series. With the series tied at 2-2, it is a matter of time on who will come out on top.

The Phoenix Suns went with their starting lineup of Chris Paul, Devin Booker, Mikal Bridges, Jae Crowder and Deandre Ayton. The Dallas Mavericks started with Luka Doncic, Jalen Brunson, Reggie Bullock, Dorian Finney-Smith and Dwight Powell.

Game Summary

As soon as the game started with the tip-off, the Mavericks opened the scoring with Doncic scoring with a floater. The Suns responded with a 3 but then the Mavericks proceeded to go on a 10-3 run. Doncic was bullying the Suns defense and getting his way with whatever defense was coming up.

However, the Suns were equally impressive on the offense especially Devin Booker who would not submit to anyone when it comes to putting points on the board. He torched the Mavericks defense from the perimeter and gave the Suns a fighting chance.

The Suns were more composed than the Mavericks as they used the clock and made smart choice on the offensive end. The Mavericks were scoring but they were missing too many shots. On top of that, the Suns defense being as incredible as it is, they were pushing their opponents to hurry with their shots. The Suns ended up with the lead in the 1st half with 49-46.

In the 3rd quarter, we witnessed the best defense that any team has played in the playoffs so far. The Suns restricted the Mavericks to just 14 points in which only 2 players scored while the rest of the team could not even touch the ball. The Mavericks gave up the ball 12 times in the 3rd quarter alone.

On the other side of the court, the Suns rallied their offense through fastbreak and widened the score gap to a huge margin. Devin Booker continued to pour down from 3 while the Mavericks defense knew they could not do anything to stop Booker.

Then entering into the 4th quarter, the Suns continued their onslaught. The Mavericks knew the game is pretty much out of their hands so they brought in their bench players during garbage time. Even then they could not challenge the Suns bench ultimately ending the game.

Box Score

Devin Booker led the Suns in scoring with 28 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Deandre Ayton followed up with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists. Mikal Bridges and Cameron Johnson gave their two-way show as they put up 14 points, 7 rebounds, an assist, 4 steals and 14 points, 2 rebounds, an assist, 2 steals and a block respectively.

For the Mavericks, Luka Doncic led the team in scoring with a double-double of 28 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Jalen Brunson followed him up with 21 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Davis Bertans came off the bench and scored 10 points. Apart from these 3 players, none of the Mavericks crossed double-digit scoring.

Takeaways from Game 5

The Phoenix Suns absolutely destroyed the Dallas Mavericks with a scoreline of 110-80. They now lead the series with 3-2 and have a firm grip on the momentum of the series. The Mavericks need to head back to the drawing board and analyze what went wrong. If they want to regain the momentum in the series, they have to win this game no matter what.
