Dakota Kai How She Got Into Pro Wrestling

Dakota Kai, like many other kids growing up in the ’90s, credits Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson with introducing her to the professional world of wrestling. Only Kai’s fandom evolved into a career. In a recent interview, the current WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion opened up about her life and professional career, along with how she ended up getting into pro wrestling.

Whereas growing up in New Zealand, Kai informed WWE’s German commentator Sebastian Hackl that it was her younger brother who first sat her down to watch the brand’s weekly wrestling shows. “He used to watch it way back when,” Kai explained. “I guess I didn’t give it much thought because I was ignorant. But one day he told me to sit down and watch it, and we found ourselves in the middle of a Rock and Austin feud, with a promo going on in the ring, and that was my first start to pro wrestling.”

Kai explained why The Rock is her favourite. “He’s charismatic and athletic, but he’s also Samoan, and I’m Samoan, so there’s a link there,” Kai stated that once she was hooked on the entertainment side, she began to appreciate the nuances in the ring. “From there, I really valued the athleticism, stunt people, and the various storylines that were going on,” she explained. “That was my introduction to professional wrestling, and then I got into it.”

NXT Women’s Champion

Kai went on to become a mainstay in WWE’s tag team division, having won the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship as well as the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship two times. She and Iyo Sky currently hold the WWE women’s tag titles. WWE Superstar Raquel Rodriguez attended the Sofi Stadium WrestleMania 39 launch party, in which Denise Salcedo questioned the former NXT Women’s Champion. During discussion, Rodriquez expressed her excitement about Dakota Kai’s return to WWE and expressed a desire to reunite with her in the future.

Kai returned to WWE on July 30 at SummerSlam, after being absent since April. Kai has been competing in the current Women’s Tag Team Tournament with Iyo Sky since her return. After having defeated Dana Brooke and Tamina, Kai and Sky were the first teams to advance. I’m overjoyed for her as she’s an ultimate superstar, said Rodriquez. The things she does and the way she moves and walks with conviction. Just by being under her wing for so long, I learned so much from her.
