Chloé Zhao Reacts to Eternals Being Called One of the Worst MCU Movies

Director Chloé Zhao responds to Eternals being dubbed one of the MCU’s worst films. Following Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals was the third film in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ajak, Sersi, Ikaris, Kingo, Sprite, Phastos, Makkari, Druig, Gilgamesh, and Thena, the ten Eternals, were brought to Earth 7,000 years ago to protect it from Deviant attacks. After believing that the Deviants were extinct, the squad was gradually assimilated into society.

Zhao was tasked with introducing not one, but ten new heroes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her job was made even more difficult by the fact that the personalities were unknown. Unfortunately, the Eternals garnered mixed to poor reviews upon their initial debut, prompting some to call it one of the MCU’s worst acquisitions.

Eternals presently has the lowest Tomatometer score of all 27 MCU films on Rotten Tomatoes, yet a 78 per cent Audience Score. This caused others to wonder if Eternals is indeed as horrible as everyone claims.

Zhao is fully aware of Eternals’ detractors, as seen by a screenshot of a Rotten Tomatoes post that she just shared on her Instagram story. The question on Rotten Tomatoes is if Eternals truly deserves to be at the bottom of the MCU; to which Zhao responds, “Does it…?” Eternals will be released on Disney+ on January 12 with a director’s commentary and other features, according to the filmmaker.

Since Ant-Man in 2015, Eternals Has Had The Lowest Domestic Box Office Opening

To be fair, Zhao did make an effort to make Eternals a unique addition to the franchise; while also diversifying the MCU. However, the film tries to compress a lot of storylines into a two-and-a-half-hour running time. Characters like Arishem, Kro, and Dane Whitman were undeveloped as a result of introducing 10 new heroes and supporting characters. Thena’s Mahd W’yry and Arishem’s intervention with the Eternals were two-story holes and contradictions in the film.

Since Ant-Man in 2015, Eternals has had the lowest domestic box office opening. While some people may not have been interested in the film because it featured new characters that had never been seen before; the ongoing coronavirus outbreak continues to have an impact on box office results; because some fans are hesitant to return to theatres. With Eternals now available on Disney+, the film may begin to receive more good reviews as more people see it. If Zhao is able to convincingly explain her thinking behind specific tale aspects of plot holes; a director’s commentary might considerably improve the film’s response.
