Camila Cabello is working on herself after admitting in a lengthy statement last year that she had used âignorantâ and âracistâ language in the past.
The singer shared that she has been attending weekly racial healing sessions so she can do better. She spoke about being held accountable for her actions. The Havana singer has moved ahead to make an effort to correct her behavior. This behavior of hers once included sharing and writing racist memes and slurs on Tumblr.
Camila is reaching out to a racial equity group which she said has made all the difference. She opened up as she shared that it has created a space where she was held accountable. The singer said, âIt created a space where I was held accountable. You get corrected, you have homework, and you learn. That’s how you move forward. Now I know better so I can do better.â
Before the uproar of the enormous Black Lives Matter movement; sparked by the unfortunate death of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others; Camila had apologized openly on social media. She admitted to being a part of hurtful language in the past.
In the lengthy statement, the singer owned up to her problematic behavior in the past. This included her former Fifth Harmony bandmate, Normani, and internet bullying. The girl groupâs fans came for Normani when they thought she had insulted Camila by calling her âquirkyâ in an interview. This prompted some to even send death threats on top of sharing photoshopped images of her being lynched.
âIt took days for her to acknowledge what I was dealing with online..”
Camila talked about the issue back then as she tweeted, âI won’t tolerate on my timeline any kind of hate, racism, or discrimination towards ANYONE.â  Although it came out that she had preserved some of them by sharing and liking them. But she owned up to being guilty of similar things in the past.
This incident had left Normani devastated and she said, âIt took days for her to acknowledge what I was dealing with online and then years for her to take responsibility for the offensive tweets that recently resurfaced.â
Camila publicly apologized back in 2019 as she wrote that when she was younger she used language that she is deeply regretful of. The singer shared that she will regret it forever and admitted to being âuneducated and ignorantâ. She added that she once became conscious of the history, weight, and true meaning behind the hurtful language.
The Easy singer said, âWhen I was younger, I used language that I’m deeply ashamed of and will regret forever. I was uneducated and ignorant and once I became aware of the history and the weight and the true meaning behind this horrible and hurtful language, I was deeply embarrassed I ever used it.â
Earlier this year, Camila took to her social media as she continued to encourage her fans to join her in making positive change. She shared the courses that had encouraged her to learn and âunpackâ the ways she had committed to systems & beliefs that oppress others. The singer also pledged to always use her platform to speak out against inequality.
Camila boarded upon a new project called The Healing Justice Project. Sharing a bit about the endeavor she said: “As I learned more about other people’s experiences in the world, I was like, “How do I help the people who are on the frontlines of dismantling systems that create oppression? And how do I bridge that with my own personal journey with mental health and healing?”
