Just when you thought things couldn’t get worse for the Indian team. There are reports circulating around that Indian spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is ruled out of T20 World Cup. Bumrah didn’t feature in the first T20I between India and South Africa as he complained about back pain. As a precautionary measure, Bumrah was rested. But the matter might be much more serious than that. Back injury was the exact same reason why Bumrah missed Asia Cup 2022. He was given enough time to recover and he made it to the Australia and South Africa T20 series. He featured in two matches against Australia but didn’t deliver his usual best.
A BCCI official has commented on Bumrah’s fitness. “Bumrah is not going to play the World T20 for sure. He has a serious back condition,” the BCCI official told PTI. “It’s a stress fracture and he could be out for a period of six months.” In absence of Bumrah, Indian bowling department has suffered a lot. Especially the death overs bowling. It was exploited by all the countries in Asia Cup 2022.
What If Bumrah Is Ruled Out?
While Arshdeep Singh has been impressive in his recent outings, he will need a senior bowler by his side. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been hammered all around the park whenever he has bowled the death overs. Having already lost Ravindra Jadeja’s services, India would be praying that Bumrah’s fitness concerns are nothing serious. Also, any team would want their players to be on the field and be involved in action before a major tournament.
If Bumrah doesn’t make the cut, India would be required to play either Deepak Chahar or Mohammad Shami. Injuries are a major concern these days. International teams prefer resting their players in bilateral series so they are available in their best shape for multi-nation tournaments. Bumrah’s absence would be a major blow to India’s chances of winning a second T20 World Cup, having emerged victorious in the inaugural edition under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.
