The Overseas Culture Promotion Agency of South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism conducted an online survey, ‘2021 National Image,’ among 12,500 persons age 16 and above in 24 nations, including South Korea. The online survey took place from September 1 to September 29, 2021, and the results were released on January 24, 2022, demonstrating that South Korea has solidified its position as a cultural superpower.
BTS and BLACKPINK were the only K-Pop groups to make the Top 10 list of people who had a positive impact on South Korea’s national image, according to the survey. BTS, a boy band, took first place with 15.1 percent of the total votes. Meanwhile, the female group BLACKPINK came in third place with 6.1 percent of the vote, indicating that the two groups are “representative groups” in South Korea. In addition, actor Lee Min Ho received 4.1 percent of the vote, while K-pop soloist PSY received 2.2 percent of the vote, making them the highest-ranked actor and K-pop soloist on the list, respectively.
BTS is ranked first, followed by South Korean President Moon Jae In at rank two (6.2 percent votes), BLACKPINK at rank three (3.6 percent votes), PSY at rank six, ‘Parasite’ director Bong Joon Ho at rank seven (1.6 percent votes), actress Song Hye Kyo at rank eight (1.3 percent votes), actor Song Joong Ki at rank nine (1.3 percent votes), and politician Ban Ki-Moon at rank ten (1.3 percent votes).
