“Born Pink” By BLACKPINK Becomes The First Album By A Girl Group To Rank In IFPI’s Biggest Albums List In 18 Years

Blackpink’s second studio album, Born Pink, has made history as the first album by a girl group to rank in the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry’s (IFPI) biggest albums list in 18 years. The album, released on September 16, 2022, through YG Entertainment and Interscope Records, marked the group’s first full-length record since The Album in 2020. The production of the album was handled by various renowned producers, including Teddy Sinclair, Willy Sinclair, Bekuh Boom, R. Tee, Kush, and Teddy Park.

Born Pink’s English-heavy sound draws mostly from pop, hip-hop, rock, and EDM, and incorporates eclectic styles ranging from disco and bubblegum pop to pop-rock and stadium rock. The album’s lyrics discuss themes of love, self-confidence, self-encouragement, dealing with fame and detractors, and more. The album was supported by two singles, “Pink Venom” and “Shut Down,” both of which reached number one on the Billboard Global 200.

Critics have generally praised the album’s production and personal lyrics, and it has been a commercial success. Born Pink debuted at number one on the Circle Album Chart, with 2.2 million copies sold in less than two days, making it the best-selling album by a female act in South Korea and the first to surpass two million sales. In the United States, it became the first album by a female group to reach number one on the Billboard 200 since Danity Kane in 2008. Born Pink also became the first album by a K-pop girl group to land atop the Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart, which earned Blackpink two Guinness World Records. The album has since been certified double million by the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA).

The Born Pink World Tour began in October to promote the album, and Blackpink members Jisoo and Rosé co-wrote the fourth track, “Yeah Yeah Yeah.” With their record-breaking achievements, Blackpink and Destiny’s Child are the only girl groups in history to rank in the year-end top 10 on an IFPI worldwide best-selling albums chart.

Fans have expressed their excitement and support for the album’s success, with many noting that it is a testament to BLACKPINK’s talent and hard work. The group has become a global phenomenon in recent years, with their unique style, powerful performances, and catchy music earning them a dedicated fanbase around the world. Born Pink’s historic achievement is a significant milestone for BLACKPINK and proof of their ongoing success in the music industry.
