Black Designers That Are Sparking Joy in 2021

This year is crucial for Black fashion designers who will be getting more of the recognition and support that they deserved. Aurora James, Brother Vellies designer, has got many retailers to join the 15 percent pledge.

It demands large companies to buy 15 percent of products from Black designers. She has gotten major retailers like Bloomingdale’s, Sephora, and Macy’s. These retailers are standing behind in supporting the important initiative. We will keep on witnessing more progress this year which is long overdue.

The year started off pretty strong as Christopher John Rodgers dressed Kamala Harris for the presidential inauguration. Meanwhile, Michelle Obama was dressed by Sergio Hudson for the auspicious event. Madam VP wore a Sergio Hudson tuxedo coat and dress later on in the evening.

Jason Rembert of Aliette is also one to watch out as he created the metallic dress Zendaya wore in the Netflix movie, Malcolm & Marie. Let us shed light on eight Black designers that are going to shine this year.

Aurora James of Brother Vellies

Her designs are more than just gorgeous as it helps keep traditional African design practices and techniques alive. She is also the one who created the 15 percent pledge which is gaining a lot of attention.

Telfar Clemens of Telfar

You must have definitely come across Telfar Clemen’s coveted bags which are sold out and have a cult following. Telfar was started back in 2003 and its logo bag has been dubbed, “Buschwick’s Birkin”. The designer also has a collaboration with UGG as they teamed up.

Christopher John Rogers

The designer is actually having a major moment as he is known for creating colorful and theatrical designs. He is a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner and he started off this year by dressing Kamala Harris’s purple inauguration coat.

Jason Rembert of Aliette

The designer is a celebrity stylist with clients who are from A-listers like Issa Rae and Marsai Martin. His luxury label is inspired by his mother and the nuances of womanhood. One of his gorgeous designs was the main attraction this year as it was donned by Zendaya in her Netflix movies, Malcolm & Marie.

Sergio Hudson

He is also one of the major designers this year with not one but two inauguration outfits. The designer created Michelle Obama’s plum look. He also designed a black tuxedo coat and dress that Kamala Harris wore later at the night for Celebrating America TV special.

Kerby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss

The designer is also no stranger to success as his collections are often celebrated Black history. He continues to reach heights with his line and multiple collaborations with brands like Reebok.

Mowalola Ogunlesi of Mowalola

He is a Nigerian-born fashion designer who resides in London. The designer is known for her designs for Kim Kardashian and she is also known for working with a wide variety of textiles like leather and PVC. She was recently hired as Kanye West’s Design Director for the upcoming Gap x Yeezy line.

Andrea Iyamah

Dumebi Iyamah is also a Nigerian fashion designer and she launched her swimwear line Andrea Iyamah back in 2013. Her pieces are inspired by color, ethnic cultures, nature, and design elements. The brand has also moved into ready-to-wear pieces with celebrities like Gabrielle Union and Michelle Obama, to name a few.
