Andrew Garfield Discusses Sony’s Response To The Spider-Man: No Way Home Leaks

Andrew Garfield discusses Sony’s reaction to the leaks of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The third MCU partnership with Tom Holland and Jon Watts was eagerly anticipated. Aside from the game-changing ending of Spider-Man: Far From Home, viewers were also excited by reports that Sam Raimi and Marc Webb’s respective Spider-Man films might tie into the storyline.

Spider-Man: No Way Home Leaks

In order to maintain the film’s mystery, Sony and Marvel Studios ran a restricted marketing campaign for Spider-Man: No Way Home amid numerous, persistent rumors. Its first trailer was released in late August 2021, followed by a second trailer a few months later.

While the involvement of villains such as Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, and Jamie Foxx’s Electro was heavily featured in the promos, Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s appearances remained a secret as the film’s premiere approached.

However, a series of marketing flubs, resulting in leaked images and videos, convinced supporters that the two prior Spider-Men would appear at some point.

Maguire and Garfield both reprised their Marvel roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and now Garfield is speaking out about the experience. In an interview with TheWrap, the actor discusses his reaction to seeing leaked photographs of the film online. He claims to have freaked out, but when he confronted Sony about it, they told him they couldn’t do anything and advised him to keep denying his involvement when questioned.

I worked so hard to keep it secret that I was in Atlanta shooting. All these leaks were happening, and I was like, ‘Oh, my God, guys, what the hell is going on? I’m working so hard here to stay secret, and then here’s an image of me with Tobey!’ And they’re like, ‘No, no, we’re gonna keep it quiet.’ ‘OK, I’ll keep denying it.’ I was happy to do it, but it was a lot of work on everyone’s part. It obviously gave people a big thrill in the theater, and what more do you want from a theater experience than a thrill?

Images of Garfield, Maguire, and Holland together were among the Spider-Man: No Way Home leaks, which is what the actor was referring to in the aforementioned interview. There was also a shot of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, the first hint that his Netflix Daredevil series may be re-integrated into the MCU in Phase 4. They were unreliable when they first surfaced online, as they’re usually shared through false accounts. However, now that the film has been released, the majority, if not all, of the leaks have shown to be true.
