After the PGA Awards snub, No Way Home’s Oscar chances in 2022 seem less likely

Following its PGA Awards setback, Spider-Man: No Way Home’s chances of receiving a Best Picture nomination at the 2022 Oscars are fading.

Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was released in December 2021, won universal critical acclaim for balancing an emotional, sincere narrative with the genre thrills that audiences have come to expect from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

No Way Home broke film office records and made over $1 billion worldwide, thanks to positive word-of-mouth and a multiverse storyline that saw Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprise their roles as Peter Parker.

No Way Home’s Oscar chances

Following the film’s enormous success, there was anticipation that No Way Home would receive an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. Many believed that by expanding the Best Picture field to a guaranteed ten spots, the Academy would be able to recognize No Way Home and boost the show’s declining audience ratings. Sony and Marvel launched a major Oscar campaign, pushing No Way Home to earn nominations across the board. Unfortunately, those efforts may be futile.

The nominations for the 2022 PGA Awards have been announced, according to Deadline. For their version of Best Picture, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, Spider-Man: No Way Home fell short of the cut of ten finalists. The only big-budget tentpole to make the cut was Dune. Other films such as King Richard, West Side Story, and Don’t Look Up helped them improve their chances.

Check out the list below:

  • Being the Ricardos
  • Belfast
  • CODA
  • Don’t Look Up
  • Dune
  • King Richard
  • Licorice Pizza
  • The Power of the Dog
  • tick, tick… BOOM!
  • West Side Story

The PGA Awards are usually a good indicator of what will be nominated for an Academy Award. Their lists don’t always line up completely, but they usually do.

Seven of the eight Best Picture nominees were also nominated for PGA Awards last year (The Father being the lone outlier). In 2019, the PGA’s list included all nine Best Picture nominees.
