The final Game 5 matchup was between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Boston Celtics. With the series tied at 2-2, both teams need a win to get ahead of one another. However, a Bucks win would be a nightmare for the Celtics considering Game 6 is going to be in the Bucks territory. In such a back and forth series, even the tiniest of advantages can decide the outcome of the entire series.
The Boston Celtics went with their starting lineup of Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Grant Williams and Al Horford. The Milwaukee Bucks started with Jrue Holiday, Grayson Allen, Wesley Matthews, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Brook Lopez.
With the opening tip, the Bucks scored the first points of the game and then going on a 9-2 run. The Celtics snapped the streak and started with their offense as well. Both teams are the best defensive teams of the NBA and looking at them going head-to-head was a treat for the audience.
In the 2nd quarter, what happened was a brilliant defensive effort from the Celtics. They were able to contain the Bucks and force a lot of turnovers. On the offensive end, Jayson Tatum went to work and caused panic on the Bucks defense.
But there was one beast who would not allow his team to be dismantled so easily and that was the Greek Freak. Knowing that the opponent cannot contain him, Giannis went on a tear in the 2nd quarter and managed to keep his Bucks afloat in the game. Yet the Celtics took the lead in the 1st half with a score of 54-47.
The 3rd quarter was an all-out war between two players primarily. Jaylen Brown and Giannis took on the challenge and they were going head to head against each other. The other players poured in but these two players were handling the pace of the game. Yet the Bucks haven’t been able to close the game and fell 10 points behind their opponents.
In the 4th quarter, the Bucks absolutely closed down the routes that their opponents use. They locked down the perimeter to harass the Celtics. On the offensive end, the Celtics could not stop the Bucks. Even if the Bucks were missing, they were grabbing offensive rebounds and converting them into points. With under 30 seconds remaining, Giannis had the chance to tie the game but he was fouled.
The Game Changer
He makes his first free throw. When he goes for the second one, he misses it but luckily it falls in the hands of Bobby Portis with a lot of fumbling. He takes the shot and makes it putting the Bucks up by 1 with under 15 seconds remaining. In the next possession, Jrue Holiday comes up big as he blocks Marcus Smart on the drive and even gets the possession for the Bucks.
With under 7 seconds remaining, the Gianni made an inbound pass to Connaughton who was fouled. He made both his free throws extending the lead to 3. The Celtics had no timeout so they made a quick pass but there again was Jrue Holiday who picked Smart’s pocket and claims the ball and the win for the Bucks.
Jayson Tatum led the Celtics in scoring with 34 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, a steal and a block. Jaylen Brown followed him up with 26 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and a block. Marcus Smart did a little bit of everything putting up 15 points, 4 rebounds, an assist, 2 steals and a block.
Giannis Antetokounmpo was absolutely on fire as he put up a double-double of 40 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assist, a steal and a block. Jrue Holiday was second in command with 24 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, a steal and 2 blocks. Bobby Portis came up big with a double-double of 14 points, 15 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.
Takeaways from Game 5
The Milwaukee Bucs got a huge victory in the TD Garden with a scoreline of 110-107. They have now taken the lead in the series, 3-2 and are looking to close he series in Game 6 which is supposed to be in their territory.
This loss will weigh heavily on the Celtics as they were ahead in the game till 3 quarters but ended up losing it because of a few mistakes in the end of the 4th quarter. Now heading into Game 6, the Celtics need to pull themselves together and come out as victors if they want to keep their title hopes alive.
