Internet Is Not Happy With Anthony Hopkins Oscar Win Over Chadwick Boseman
Anthony Hopkins pulled off the most shocking upset on April 25th Academy Awards. He won the Oscar for Best Actor in a leading role for his performance in The Father. What upset innumerable viewers are that he won over the late Chadwick Boseman at the 93rd Annual Academy Awards.
Chadwick passed away last year after battling colon cancer for four years. He was a frontrunner to win his first Academy Award for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. However, Anthony won and made a different kind of history as the oldest actor to take home the award.
The final award of the night was presented by last year’s Oscar victor in the category, Joaquin Phoenix. He started off by saying it is a shame that they have to choose just one. Anthony was not present at the Oscars which was broadcast live from Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles. He was not even in attendance through one of the handfuls of satellite locations across the world.
Joaquin went on to accept the award on his behalf. Anthony beats other nominees which included quite a diverse pick. It included Boseman for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Steven Yeun for Minari, Riz Ahmed for The Sound of Metal, and Gary Oldman for Mank. Anthony’s latest win marks his second career Oscar after his victory for The Silence of the Lambs. He has been previously nominated for Best Lead Actor in 1994’s The Remains of the Day and 1996’s Nixon. Also twice for Best Supporting Actor in 1998’s Amistad and 2020s The Two Popes.
“That Chadwick snub was the worst ending to the Oscars in Years”.
Viewers were not happy as the category was saved for last which they assumed was to pay tribute to Chadwick after announcing him as the winner. It was an abrupt ending to the Oscars telecast and featured many historic wins. However, it lacked the glamour which is usually attached to the Academy Awards.
Fans were quick to react to the sudden end to this year’s awards season by taking to Twitter to air their frustrations, with one viewer calling it the “worst ending to the Oscars in years.” One user asked, “Wait they didn’t save the Best Actor award in the end for a Chadwick Boseman tribute?” While another user wrote, “That Chadwick snub was the worst ending to the Oscars in Years”.
Viewers were also quick to draw comparisons to the big Oscar fail of 2017 with the wrong winner being announced for The Best Picture award. They compared the winning of Anthony to the win of La La Land. In 2017, La La Land was accidentally announced as the winner for Best Picture instead of the actual winner, Moonlight.
