Falcon & The Winter Soldier Story Prominently Features Race Promises Showrunner

The Falcon & The Winter Soldier’s showrunner Malcolm Spellman revealed that race will be one of the prominent parts of the show’s story. The highly-anticipated spin-off of Captain America will be premiering on Disney+.

It will be the second series into the Marvel Cinematic Universe after WandaVision ends in early March. The series will pick up from where Avengers: Endgame left off and will follow the disparate duo, Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes.

They will be facing a world without Steve Rogers’ Captain America. Endgame had revealed how the shield was passed onto Sam, appointing him as the next Captain America in the MCU. However, the title will not be expected to come as easily to Sam and he will have to deal with opposition from the U.S. government.

They would want to have John Walker as the next Captain America. Sam will also likely help Bucky get back to his past deeds as the Winter Soldier. He will also be dealing with the threat posed by returning Captain America: Civil War villain Zemo.

The Falcon & The Winter Soldier could feature the MCU’s first Black Captain America. Malcolm revealed that he knew this was a huge opportunity laid right in front of him. In an interview with TVLine, the showrunner shared that he hopes the series will have a similar impact on Black youths as Black Panther had.

Isaiah Bradley Will Also Be A Part Of The Show

For a bit of help with his pitch, Malcolm teamed up with Nate Moore; who is the VP of Production and Development at Marvel. He is also Black and though the showrunner says his meeting with Kevin Feige, the Marvel President; went horribly wrong, he believes Nate advocated for him. He said this is because they shared a similar vision for the series.

The showrunner said, “He heard what I wanted to do, that I wanted [race] to be part of the story very prominently, and I think he knew it was right.” However, with Malcolm’s comments in mind, the series will mostly focus on issues surrounding race and identity as Sam struggles with taking on the responsibilities of Captain America.

The show will also be including Isaiah Bradley who is known for being the first Black Captain America in the comics. This can also lead to Sam unveiling the secret history of Black men in the U.S. government’s super-soldiers program.

MCU has never shied away from diversity and inclusivity with Black Panther. The movie had featured a Black superhero and a Black cast and a Black director. Malcolm made a comparison choosing to compare The Falcon with Black Panther which will only further anticipate the series.
