Karan Johar has created nationalistic films such as Raazi, Kesari, Gunjan Saxena, and the recently released SherShaah. The undiscovered narrative of C. Sankaran Nair, who fought a legendary courtroom battle to establish the truth about the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, was just announced by the producer. We now know that Dharma Productions is working on a script based on the story of independence fighter Usha Mehta.

“During the Quit India Movement, Usha Mehta established an underground pirate radio station named Congress Radio, which gave the British Government a hard time. She was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour, after independence. It’s a heroic story about an unsung hero, and the Dharma creative team has been developing on it for a while,” a source said, adding that the movie will be directed by Kannan Iyer, who is also co-writing the script with Darab Farooqui.

“Dharma Productions is working on several scripts, one of which is based on Usha Mehta”, a  well-placed industry source reveals, ” The alleged script has been in the works for a few years, with the production house conducting extensive research on her”.

The script is based on the play Khar Khar, written by Amatya Goradia and Pritesh Sodha, which won Best Script and Best Director Award at IPTA’s Inter-collegiate drama competition, and Karan Johar is hoping to get Kannan Iyer to helm the venture, Darab Farooqui is working on adapting the piece for the screen”, continued the source. Dharma Productions is planning to start production on the film, which is said to be in the same genre as Alia Bhatt’s Raazi. Casting for the film is already underway.

The yet-to-be-titled film will tell the story of Usha Mehta, who managed an underground pirate radio station named Congress Radio during the Quit India Movement and gave the British government a hard time.

Meanwhile, Karan Johar is in Delhi, getting ready to start filming Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, his directorial debut. The film is believed to be a multi-generational rom-com with a star-studded cast that includes Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi. In this film, Ranveer plays a Delhi boy, with the identities of the other characters being kept under wraps for the time being.
