Nick Cordero dies at 41 due to severe corona virus complications
The Tony award-nominated Broadway actor, Nick Cordero, passed away from severe COVID-19 complications on July 5. The 41 year old actor has starred in hit musicals including Waitress, A Bronx Tale and Bullets Over Broadway. Cordero died on Sunday at Cedars-Sinai hospital after spending more than 90 days there.
Amanda’s heartbreaking message
Nick’s passing was sadly confirmed by his wife Amanda Kloots via Instagram. “God has another angel in heaven now. My darling husband passed away this morning. He was surrounded in love by his family, singing and praying as he gently left this earth.” she began her caption.
“I am in disbelief and hurting everywhere. My heart is broken as I cannot imagine our lives without him. Nick was such a bright light, he was everyone’s friend, loved to listen, help and especially talk. He was an incredible actor and musician. He loved his family and loved being a father and husband. Elvis and I will miss him in everything we do, everyday,” she wrote in her emotional tribute.
She went on to thank the medical team who supported Nick and their family throughout the ordeal. “To Nick’s extraordinary doctor, Dr. David Ng, you were my positive doctor! There are not many doctors like you. Kind, smart, compassionate, assertive and always eager to listen to my crazy ideas. Or call yet another doctor for me for a second opinion. You’re a diamond in the rough,” she wrote.
She thanked everyone for the love and support that poured in the last 95 days. “You have no idea how much you lifted my spirits at 3 pm everyday as the world sang Nick’s song, Live Your Life. We sang it to him today, holding his hands. As I sang the last line to him, ‘they’ll give you hell but don’t you light them kill your light not without a fight. Live your life,’ I smiled because he definitely put up a fight. I will love you forever and always my sweet man.”
Nick’s Journey
Cordero entered the emergency room on 30 March. He had a succession of health setbacks including mini-strokes, blood clots, sepsis infections, a tracheotomy and a temporary pacemaker implant. He had been on a ventilator and unconscious and had his right leg amputated. A double lung transplant was being explored.
Kloots sent him daily videos of her and their one-year-old son, Elvis. Amanda regularly shared updates to her followers on the ups and downs of her husband’s recovery. Fans and well-wishers gathered daily to dance to Cordero’s song “Live Your Life,” in hopes for a positive recovery. Often with the hashtags #WakeUpNick, #OffTheVent or #CodeRocky.
Despite his tragic young passing, Nick leaves behind a lasting legacy with his family and career. He is survived by Amanda and their one-year-old son Elvis.
He made his debut in the off-Broadway production of The Toxic Avenger, starred in Rock of Ages on Broadway in 2012. Nick was nominated for a Tony Award for his role of Cheech in the 2014 musical, Bullets Over Broadway. Cordero also appeared in several episodes of Blue Bloods and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. He was last onstage in a Kennedy Center presentation of Little Shop of Horrors.
Remembering Nick
A lot of actors from the industry reached out with condolences, with many urging people to donate. Cordero’s dear friend and actor Zach Braff posted a heartbreaking tribute that revealed that Nick asked him ‘to look out for his wife and one year old son.’ “I can honestly tell you I have never met a kinder human being,” Braff wrote on Twitter and Instagram. “Don’t believe that covid only claims the elderly and infirm.”
The musical director and collaborator Michael J Moritz wrote: “I am so incredibly sad to lose such a wonderful friend and musical partner. Amanda will need all the support and love we can offer.” Jessie Mueller, Cordero’s Waitress Co-star, posted “heartbroken doesn’t even cover it.”
Viola Davis tweeted, “RIP Nick Cordero! My condolences to you Amanda who fought and loved so hard. So sorry for his little one. My heart is with you. May flights of angels.”
Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Hilary Duff, Frankie Grande were few among many stars who offered their heartfelt condolences to the family.
