Kolkata Knight Riders vs Lucknow Super Giants, 53rd Match (N), Pune, May 07, 2022, Indian Premier League

Match Result: Super Giants won by 75 runs

Player of the Match: Avesh Khan

Match Report: One of the most dominant performances seen in this edition of TATA IPL. Lucknow Super Giants were leading the contest from ball one. They never gave a chance to the Knights to make a comeback. With this win, they have jumped to the top of the table. They have secured 8 wins in 11 matches and their spot in the playoffs seems secure as of now. KL Rahul is finally getting the rewards of his brilliant captaincy.

Batting first, LSG had a horrible start, with their skipper KL Rahul being dismissed for a diamond duck. It was a wrong call by Quinton de Kock, and KL had to pay the price. But the rebuilding process by de Kock and Hooda was done well, with both the experienced players showing their class. de Kock was in superb touch, and he scored a quick half-century. Krunal Pandya joined Hooda later. Pandya is not used to batting at this position, and it was quite evident, as he struggled to score runs. Ayush Badoni was not in the best of touch. Holder’s two sixes took LSG to an above par score.

With a mammoth target to chase, KKR didn’t have the best of starts as their opener was dismissed for a duck. Wickets kept tumbling as the top order played loose shots. KKR lost three top batter inside the powerplay. Nitish Rana lost his stumps to a beautifully executed yorker by Avesh Khan. But that’s when Russell came in and began his fireworks. In an innings of only 19 deliveries, the Caribbean big-hitter struck 3 boundaries and five sixes. Once he lost his wicket, it was all but a formality for the Giants.

Rahul, LSG captain: Played really well, started well with the bat, except for the run out. Was a tricky wicket. Knew it was going to be slow and sticky. Had to get around 150-160. The way Quinton and Deepak batted, made it look easy. Big hitting from Stoinis and Jason gave the momentum. We started superbly with the ball, put the ball in the right areas, couldn’t have asked for more. Trust them a great deal (his pace battery). Having skill is one thing, but knowing what to do when is important. They’ve been put under pressure a couple of times but they’ve stuck to their strengths and been brave with the ball. That’s all we can ask for. Keep trusting what the best ball is on that wicket. Dre Russ going like that is scary at times. We do have some plans before the game, and what’s good to see is they remember those plans under pressure.

Jason Holder: Extremely happy. I think it was an excellent team effort, the bowlers did an excellent job to defend that total. I thought the wicket was not easy to start on but as you get a hang of the pace of the wicket you can score and strike easily. Credit must be given to the bowlers, I thought we held our nerve with the bat to post a 170+ total. The guys said it is not easy and a lot of the guys (bowlers) went into the wicket which paid out well and was the right thing to do.
