Mumbai Indians vs Punjab Kings, 23rd Match (N), Pune, April 13, 2022, Indian Premier League

Match Result: Punjab Kings won by 12 runs

Player of the Match: Mayank Agrawal

Match Report: Five consecutive defeats for five-time champions Mumbai Indians. Who would have imagined this? This is just crazy. Perhaps the season after mega-auction is never the best for MI. We have seen it in the past. Now, they need to win 8 out of their remaining 8 matches to secure a playoff spot. It seems highly unlikely. But let’s not forget that they have done this before. Back in 2014, MI scripted one of the most fantastic comebacks the cricketing world has seen.

Batting first, PBKS had one of the best starts possible. Both the openers performed brilliantly. Shikhar Dhawan, who has been quite for a while, showed the world that he still has it in him. He scored 70 runs at a good pace while his partner Mayank Agrawal scored 52. This opening partnership gave a nice platform for the rest of the batters coming in. But honestly, most of the job was done by these two. Jitesh Sharma gave the perfect finishing touch. The youngster who is playing his first IPL season, has impressed so far. Shahrukh Khan also joined in the fireworks.

In reply, Rohit Sharma got to a good start but did not capitalize. But it was the young star Dewald Brevis who was the highlight. Boy, is he a pleasure to watch! The over of Rahul Chahar where he struck 4 sixes was the highlight of the match. The future is quite bright for the South African batsman and in turn for his franchise. Tilak Varma looked good during his stay but lost his wicket in a run-out. The wicket of Suryakumar Yadav meant that there was no one left to save the Men in Blue from facing another defeat.

Mayank Agarwal | Winning captain and Player of the Match: It was a good night, very happy to contribute to the team’s win. The crucial thing for us was the two points. We can’t just say it was runs on the board, this game had a lot of ups and downs. There were a lot of crucial moments and more often than not, we were nailing and winning those moments. When the game was 50-50, we won those moments and it came towards us. It wasn’t batting alone, it was periods in the game. That’s the brand of cricket we want to play, we want to play aggressive, hard cricket. With that, we got to show good mindset.

Rohit Sharma | Losing captain – It’s hardly anything to find out (any negatives), thought we played well, came pretty close to closing the game, a couple of run-outs didn’t help our cause. At one time, we were cruising along, but didn’t hold our nerves, credit to PBKS for bowling well in the second half. We’re trying to play with a different thought process, but it’s not working out well. But I don’t want to take the credit out of the guys who played well and Punjab did so today. We aren’t playing good cricket, we need to understand some situations and execute according to it.
